Apparently today was my 5th anniversary as a WordPress user. It’s been a long journey from the day I created a WordPress.com account to where I am now and creating customized child themes. Here’s to the start of another year and learning even more about WordPress!

Sorry that things have been quiet around here lately. I’ve been focusing a lot of time on learning how Standard Theme works and building a child theme for churches. This theme is built with church plants in mind that don’t have the money for a custom-built website. It includes a slier for the images on the front page, as well as a plugin for events and one to list your staff. It does require Standard Theme. If you haven’t purchased Standard, you should really consider it!

Take a look at the Demo Site. You can download the theme files from this blog post.

spam5

I will never understand the purpose of spam (the food or digital kind). I get my fair share of spam comments here just like every other blogger does, but thankfully none of them ever make it through thanks to an incredible plugin called Akismet that ships with every copy of WordPress. Here are some of the funnier spam comments I deleted this week. (I might have to make this a weekly post…)

Welcome, new subscribers! Looks like several of you subscribed to my blog this week. I just wanted to let you know that things may be quiet for a couple of weeks. I’m currently working on some new content rather than just posting whenever I feel like it. Hang in there and don’t unsubscribe until you decide you don’t like what I have to say.

I’d love to know who you are and where you came from down in the comments section. If you have your own website, be sure to include the address so I can check it out and get to know you.

Standard Theme

The brilliant guys at 8BIT released the next version of Standard Theme last Friday. I’ve used Standard Theme since version 2 on my blog. Standard 3 is a premium theme, but it is definitely worth the investment. If you’re considering any kind of customizations, I suggest you invest in the Support License so that you have access to the forums. I’m in there a lot helping others and getting a lot of help.

If you’ve visited my blog anytime over the last few years you know that I’ve gone through a LOT of designs. I started out on Blogger before moving to WordPress in college. This post is intended to introduce you to the resources that I use for hosting and designing my blog.

Good question. It’s something I’ve been trying to figure out for a while now and I’ve yet to really pin it down. I have so many things I want to write about:

personal

technology

church/worship/visual worship/

politics

reactions to things

things with no category

Right now I’m participating in a series of blogs based on a list of twenty topics. This will provide one or two posts a week for a while. I’d love to start writing more than just once a week, so I’m hoping this series gets me started. And I’m hoping having specific categories will get me started in the right direction. Thanks John Saddington (Tentblogger) for the inspiration to narrow my focus.

I’m sure this won’t be an easy process. If you look back my post history there are massive gaps in my dedication to this blog. But by starting off following a series of pre-determined ideas, and with some extra effort to develop focused categories, I think I can do this.

The Twenty

January 6, 2011 — 2 Comments

Gary Molander (@garymo) is someone I’ve never met, never seen, and until about 5 minutes, never visited his blog. But I’ve seen his name on Twitter a lot lately. So when a friend of mine posted on her blog about his “20 Topics I Wish You’d Write About“, I was intrigued. It’s a new year, I have a new blog design, and some new goals for my blog. I figured “hey, it’s a list of 20 topics that someone who is highly respected wrote, let’s check this out, maybe I can glean 20 blog posts out of this. This is his list:

The intersection of art and leadership.
Let me introduce you to my hero.
The best community of people I know.
The most difficult thing about working at a church.
My prayer for my children.
How I reward our best customers/clients.
What I do when I’m frustrated.
What I do when I’m depressed.
How God continues to save me.
Why church is relevant for me.
Why church is irrelevant for me.
The day I knew God was real.
How I drive traffic to my blogsite.
How I handle negative people (on my blog, in my life, in my family).
Why some people struggle with being generous.
The best leadership style I know of.
How to create a grateful attitude in your children.
The single event that transformed me the most.
What the Kingdom of God really looks like.
Why I needed to apologize.

From what I can gather, this list doesn’t have to be responded to in order. So starting next Monday, I’m going to respond to one of these questions every Monday. I’m kind of excited about this. There are some great questions in this list and I can’t wait to start exploring them. I have a feeling some of my own responses will surprise me.
